Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet.

  1. Remove all packaging tapes and protective materials from inside and outside the printer.
  2. Install ink cartridges: Open front cover, insert cartridges in correct color slots until they click.
  3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load up to 250 sheets of plain paper.
  4. Connect power cord to printer and wall outlet.
  5. Turn on printer using power switch.

WARNING! Do not touch printhead or ink contacts. Keep printer horizontal during installation.

First-Time Setup

Power on printer; follow on-screen prompts on touchscreen.

  1. Language selection: Choose preferred language for display and menus.
  2. Date & Time: Set current date and time for fax and print logs.
  3. Network setup: Select wireless network, enter password to connect.
  4. Install software: Insert CD or download drivers from Brother website, follow installation wizard.
  5. Align printhead: Printer will automatically print and scan alignment page.

CAUTION! Do not unplug printer during initial setup or firmware updates.

  2. On touchscreen, go to Network > Wireless > Setup Wizard.
  3. Select your network from list, enter password.
  4. For USB, connect cable to printer and computer, install drivers when prompted.
  5. Verify connection by printing network configuration page.

Tip: Place printer within range of Wi-Fi router for stable connection.

Printing & Scanning

Supports documents, photos, web pages, envelopes.

  1. Print from computer: Select Brother printer in print dialog, adjust settings as needed.
  2. Print from mobile: Use Brother iPrint&Scan app or built-in mobile printing (AirPrint, Google Cloud Print).
  3. Copy: Place original on glass or in ADF, press Copy on panel, select options, press Start.
  4. Scan to computer: Place document, press Scan, choose destination (PC, USB, email).
  5. Scan to mobile: Use app to scan directly to smartphone/tablet.
  6. Fax: Place document, enter number using keypad on screen, press Start Fax.
  7. Cancel job: Press Stop/Exit button on panel or cancel from computer.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing. Keep hands away from moving parts.

Maintenance

Clean printhead: Via touchscreen menu (Maintenance > Printhead Cleaning). Align printhead: Print alignment page from menu. Replace ink: When low ink warning appears, replace cartridge promptly. Clean exterior: Use soft, dry cloth; do not use alcohol or solvents.

CAUTION! Turn off and unplug printer before cleaning. Use only Brother genuine ink cartridges.
