Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet and network connection.

  1. Remove all packaging tape and protective materials from inside and outside the printer.
  2. Install the toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove cartridge from packaging, shake gently, and insert until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Pull out paper tray, adjust guides, load paper print-side down, and reinsert tray.
  4. Connect power cord to printer and wall outlet.
  5. Connect to computer via USB or to network via Ethernet cable (for wired setup).

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of the toner cartridge. Avoid placing printer in dusty, humid, or hot locations.

First-Time Setup

Power on printer; follow on-screen prompts on the LCD control panel.

  1. Initial startup: The printer will perform a self-test and may print an alignment page.
  2. Set language, date, and time using the control panel menu.
  3. Install drivers and software: Insert the supplied CD or download from Brother Solutions Center. Follow on-screen instructions.
  4. For wireless setup: Use the control panel to select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
  5. Configure fax settings (if used): Connect phone line, set fax header (name/number).

CAUTION! Ensure the printer is on a firm surface with adequate ventilation. Keep the power cord and cables organized to prevent tripping.

Connecting to Network

Wired: Connect Ethernet cable from router to printer. Wireless: Use WPS or manual setup via control panel.

  1. For Wired: Connect cable; printer will automatically obtain an IP address (DHCP).
  2. For Wireless (WPS): Press and hold WPS button on router, then navigate on printer to Network > WLAN > WPS.
  3. For Wireless (Manual): On printer, go to Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard. Select your SSID and enter password.
  4. Verify connection by printing a Network Configuration Report from the menu.

Tip: Ensure the router is within range. For best performance, use a 5GHz network if supported.

Printing & Copying

Supports standard and advanced printing/copying features.

  1. Printing from PC: Select 'Brother MFC-8890DW' as printer in application, adjust properties as needed.
  2. Copying: Place original on scanner glass or in ADF. Use control panel to set copies, darkness, size, duplex. Press START.
  3. ID Copy: Copies both sides of an ID card onto a single page.
  4. N-Up Printing/Copying: Prints multiple pages on one sheet.
  5. Poster Printing: Enlarges a document across multiple pages.
  6. Secure Print: Holds print job until PIN is entered at printer.

Scanning & Faxing

  2. Press SCAN button or use Brother iPrint&Scan software.
  3. Select destination and scan settings (format, resolution).
  4. Press START.

Faxing:

  1. Load document in ADF or on glass.
  2. Dial number using keypad or speed dial.
  3. Press START FAX or black START button.
  4. Use Fax Memory for delayed transmission or broadcasting.
