Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet and computer/network.

  1. Install ink cartridges: Open front cover, remove protective tape from cartridges, insert into correct slots until they click.
  2. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in main tray, load plain paper face down.
  3. Connect power: Plug power cord into unit and wall outlet.
  4. Connect to computer: Use USB cable or configure network connection.

WARNING! Do not touch ink nozzles or copper contacts. Ensure all protective materials are removed.

First-Time Setup

Power on device; follow on-screen prompts on LCD.

  1. Language selection: Choose language from initial setup menu.
  2. Date & Time: Set current date and time for fax logs.
  3. Network setup: For wireless, select SSID and enter password using keypad.
  4. Install software: Insert CD or download drivers from Brother website, follow installation wizard.
  5. Align printhead: Print alignment page when prompted for optimal print quality.

CAUTION! Do not unplug or turn off during initial setup or firmware update.

Connecting Devices

USB: Direct connection to computer. Network: Ethernet cable to router. Wireless: Connect to Wi-Fi network.

  1. Turn off device before connecting cables (except for USB hot-swap).
  2. For network, connect Ethernet cable to router and device's LAN port.
  3. For wireless, use control panel to select network and enter security key.
  4. Install drivers on all computers that will use the device.

Tip: Use WPS button on router for easier wireless setup if supported.

Printing & Scanning

Supports printing from PC applications, direct photo printing (PictBridge), and scanning to PC/network.

  1. Print document: Select print from application, choose MFC-885CW as printer, adjust settings as needed.
  2. Copy document: Place original in ADF or on glass, press COPY, select options, press Start.
  3. Scan document: Place original, press SCAN, choose destination (PC, etc.), press Start.
  4. Scan to email: Configure email settings first via software, then scan directly to email recipient.
  5. Photo printing: Insert photo paper in tray, select photo paper type in print settings for best quality.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing. Keep hands clear of moving parts.

Fax Operations

Send and receive faxes manually or automatically. PC-FAX allows sending faxes directly from computer.

  1. Send fax: Place document, dial number using keypad or speed dial, press Start.
  2. Receive fax: Set to auto mode to receive automatically, or manual to answer with handset.
  3. PC-FAX: Install software, create document, select "Print" and choose Brother PC-FAX driver.
  4. Fax memory: Stores received faxes if paper runs out; prints when paper is reloaded.
  5. Redial: Automatically redials busy numbers (set number of retries in menu).

Note: Ensure phone line is connected to LINE port, not PHONE port.

Care & Maintenance

Unplug before cleaning exterior. Use soft, dry cloth; do not use alcohol or solvents on plastic.

  1. Clean exterior: Wipe with damp cloth, then dry.
  2. Clean scanner glass: Use lint-free cloth and glass cleaner; avoid spraying directly on glass.
  3. Replace ink: Monitor ink levels on LCD or software; replace when low or empty.
  4. Printhead maintenance: Run nozzle check and cleaning cycles from maintenance menu if print quality declines.
  5. Clear paper jams: Follow guide in manual to remove jammed paper carefully from paper path.
