Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet and network connection.

  1. Install toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove packing material, insert cartridge until it clicks.
  2. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load letter-size paper face down.
  3. Connect power: Plug power cord into printer and wall outlet.
  4. Connect to computer/network: Use USB cable, Ethernet cable, or configure wireless.
  5. Install software: Insert driver CD or download from Brother website.

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of the toner cartridge. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or high humidity.

First-Time Configuration

Power on printer; follow on-screen prompts on LCD or software setup wizard.

  1. Set language: Press Menu, navigate to General Setup > Language.
  2. Set date/time: Menu > General Setup > Date & Time.
  3. Configure network: For wireless, use WPS button or manual setup via LCD menu.

  3. Verify connection: Print network configuration report from Menu > Network > Print Report.

Tip: Ensure printer is within range of wireless router. Avoid interference from other devices.

Printing & Copying

Supports standard and advanced printing features.

  1. Print from computer: Select Brother MFC-8690DW as printer in application, adjust properties as needed.
  2. Copy: Place original in ADF or on glass, use numeric keypad to set copies, press Start.
  3. Duplex printing: Enable in printer driver properties under Finishing.
  4. Multiple pages per sheet: Select in driver under Page Layout.

WARNING! Do not touch the scanner glass or ADF rollers with fingers; use clean cloth if needed.

Scanning & Faxing

  2. Scan to email: Configure email settings in Web Based Management first.
  3. Send fax: Dial number using keypad, press Fax Start, or use PC fax software.
  4. Receive fax: Set to Auto mode to answer after specified rings.

Note: For scanning, ensure TWAIN or WIA driver is installed on computer.

Maintenance & Supplies

Replace toner cartridge when low or empty message appears. Clean printer exterior with dry cloth.

  1. Toner replacement: Open front cover, remove old cartridge, unpack new one, insert firmly.
  2. Drum unit replacement: Replace after approx. 12,000 pages (indicator on LCD).
  3. Clean scanner glass: Use soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.
  4. Clear paper jams: Follow guide on LCD; open rear cover or trays to remove jammed paper.

CAUTION! Use only Brother Genuine toner and drums. Do not dispose of toner cartridge in fire.
