Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet and network connection.

  1. Remove packaging materials and tape from all components.
  2. Install toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove cartridge from packaging, shake gently, insert until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load plain paper face down.
  4. Connect power cord to rear of device and to AC outlet.
  5. Connect network cable to Ethernet port and router/switch.
  6. Connect USB cable to computer if using direct connection.

WARNING! Device is heavy; lift with care using handles. Ensure proper ventilation around unit.

First-Time Setup

Power on device; follow initial configuration prompts.

  1. Set language: Use control panel arrows to select language, press OK.
  2. Set date/time: Navigate to System Settings > General Setup > Date & Time.
  3. Configure network: Use control panel to set IP address (DHCP or manual).
  4. Install drivers: Insert CD or download from Brother website, follow on-screen instructions.
  5. Test print: Print configuration report from menu to verify setup.

CAUTION! Do not touch the green underside of the toner cartridge. Keep device away from direct sunlight.

Connecting to Network

Wired Ethernet connection for multiple users.

  1. Connect Ethernet cable from device to router/switch.
  2. Power on device and wait for network initialization.
  3. Print Network Configuration Report: Menu > Report > Network Config.
  4. Note IP address for web interface access.
  5. Install network drivers on each computer using CD or download.
  6. Add printer via IP address in Windows/Mac printer settings.

Tip: Use Brother Web BRAdmin for remote management and configuration.

Printing & Copying

Supports standard and advanced printing/copying features.

  1. Printing: Select document, choose Brother MFC-8460N as printer, adjust properties as needed.
  2. Copying: Place original on scanner glass or in ADF, use control panel to set copies, darkness, size.
  3. 2-sided: Select 2-sided option for duplex printing/copying.
  4. ID Copy: Place two ID cards on scanner glass, press ID Copy button.
  5. N-Up: Print multiple pages on single sheet (2-up, 4-up).

Scanning: Place document, press Scan button, select destination (Email, File, OCR). Configure scan settings via control panel or software. Use ScanSoft PaperPort or Presto! PageManager for OCR.

Faxing: Load document, dial number using keypad, press Start. Program speed dials (up to 200 entries). Use PC-FAX to send/receive faxes directly from computer. Set fax header with name/number. Configure fax forwarding and memory reception.

Maintenance & Supplies

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance.

  1. Toner Replacement: Replace when toner light illuminates or print quality fades. Use Brother TN-360 cartridge.
  2. Drum Unit: Replace approximately every 15,000 pages (DR-360).
  3. Paper Jam Clearing: Open rear cover, front cover, and ADF to remove jammed paper gently.
  4. Cleaning: Wipe exterior with soft, dry cloth. Clean scanner glass with glass cleaner and soft cloth.
  5. Firmware Updates: Download from Brother support website.
