Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet.

  1. Remove all packing materials and tapes from inside and outside the unit.
  2. Install toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove packing material, insert cartridge until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Pull out paper tray, adjust guides, load paper (letter or A4).
  4. Connect power cord to rear of device and to AC outlet.
  5. Connect USB or Ethernet cable for computer/network connection.

WARNING! Device is heavy; lift with care using handles. Ensure ventilation space around unit.

First-Time Setup

Power on device; follow on-screen prompts on control panel LCD.

  1. Initialization: Device will perform self-test and calibrate.
  2. Set language: Use MENU button to select LANGUAGE, choose ENGLISH (default).
  3. Set date/time: Navigate to SYSTEM SETUP > DATE/TIME.
  4. Install drivers: Insert CD or download from Brother website, follow installation wizard.
  5. Configure network (if applicable): Use control panel to set IP address or use DHCP.

CAUTION! Do not turn off during initialization. Keep original packaging for possible service.

Connecting to Network

  3. Configure TCP/IP: Menu > Network > TCP/IP > Configure as needed (DHCP or manual).
  4. Print network configuration page to verify settings.
  5. Install network drivers on computers from CD or website.

Printing & Copying

Supports standard and advanced printing/copying features.

  1. Printing: Select Brother printer driver from application, adjust properties as needed (duplex, quality, paper source).
  2. Copying: Place original on flatbed or in ADF, press COPY, set number of copies (1-99), adjust settings, press START.
  3. Special Copy Features: - Reduce/Enlarge: 25%-400% in 1% increments - N-up: 2, 4, 8, or 16 pages per sheet - Poster: Enlarge across multiple pages - Booklet: Automatic 2-sided booklet creation
  4. Toner Save: Enable in driver or device menu to extend toner life.

WARNING! Do not look directly at laser beam inside device. Allow device to cool after heavy use.

Scanning & Faxing

Scanning: 1. Place document on flatbed or in ADF. 2. Press SCAN button. 3. Select scan mode (File, Email, OCR). 4. Adjust resolution and format (PDF, JPEG, TIFF). 5. Press START to scan.

Faxing: 1. Load document face up in ADF or face down on flatbed. 2. Dial number using keypad or speed dial. 3. Adjust resolution if needed (Standard, Fine, Super Fine). 4. Press START to send. 5. For receiving, ensure device is in FAX mode (auto or manual).

Fax Memory: Stores up to 100 pages if paper runs out or device is off.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Unplug before cleaning. Use dry, lint-free cloth only.

  1. Exterior: Wipe with dry cloth. For stubborn marks, dampen cloth slightly with water.
  2. Scanner glass: Clean with glass cleaner and soft cloth. Avoid scratching.
  3. Paper path: Use approved cleaning sheet if paper dust accumulates.
  4. Toner cartridge: Replace when print quality fades or toner low message appears.
  5. Drum unit: Replace as needed (typically every 4-5 toner cartridges).
