Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet.

  1. Remove all packaging tape and protective materials from inside and outside the unit.
  2. Install the toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove cartridge from packaging, shake gently, and insert until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load paper print-side down.
  4. Connect power cable to the rear of the device and plug into a grounded outlet.
  5. Connect to computer using the supplied USB cable.

WARNING! Do not touch the green underside of the toner cartridge. Avoid placing the device in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

First-Time Setup

Power on the device; install software from the included CD-ROM.

  1. Turn on the power switch. Wait for the READY indicator to light.
  2. Insert the Brother Software CD into your computer. Follow on-screen instructions to install drivers and utilities.
  3. For network installation (optional), run the Network Configuration utility from the CD.
  4. Configure basic settings: Press MENU on the control panel to set date, time, and fax header.
  5. Print a test page: From the driver properties or by pressing MENU and then 9, 9.

CAUTION! Ensure the device is on a flat surface to prevent paper jams. Keep the area well-ventilated.

  5. For network: Install the optional network interface card, then run the Brother Network Configuration tool.

Tip: Always use the original Brother USB cable for reliable connection. Install the latest drivers from the Brother website for optimal performance.

Printing & Copying

Supports standard and custom print/copy jobs.

  1. Printing from PC: Select 'Brother MFC-8220' as the printer in your application's print dialog.
  2. Making Copies:
    • Place original on scanner glass or in the ADF.
    • Press COPY.
    • Use numeric keypad to enter number of copies (1-99).
    • Adjust density with left/right arrow keys.
    • Press START to begin copying.
  3. Special Copy Functions: Press MENU, then COPY SETUP for reduction/enlargement, photo mode, or 2-in-1 copying.
  4. Interrupt Printing: Press GO (or PAUSE) to temporarily stop a print job for a priority copy.

WARNING! Do not look directly at the laser beam inside the printer. Allow hot surfaces to cool before performing internal maintenance.

Scanning & Faxing

Scanning to PC:
1. Install the Brother scanner driver and software (e.g., ControlCenter).
2. Place document on glass or in ADF.
3. Press SCAN button, or launch the scanning software on your PC.
4. Select destination (file, email, OCR application).

Sending a Fax:
1. Ensure the telephone line is connected to the LINE port.
2. Place document face down in ADF or on glass.
3. Dial the number using the keypad or a speed dial.
4. Press START/FAX to send.
5. For delayed transmission, use the MEMORY TX function.

Receiving Faxes: Set mode to FAX, TEL/FAX, or ANS/FAX in the fax setup menu.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Unplug the device before cleaning. Use a dry, lint-free cloth.

  1. Exterior: Wipe casing with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, dampen cloth slightly with water.
  2. Scanner Glass: Clean with a soft cloth and glass cleaner. Do not spray directly onto glass.
  3. Paper Path: Open rear cover and gently remove any paper dust or debris.
  4. Toner Cartridge: Replace when print quality fades or "Toner Low" message appears. Recycle used cartridges.
  5. Rollers: Clean pickup and separation rollers with a dry cloth if paper feeding issues occur.

CAUTION! Do not use alcohol, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. Never touch the transfer roller or drum unit.
