Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet and computer/network access.

  1. Remove all packaging materials and tape from inside and outside the unit.
  2. Install toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove protective tape from cartridge, insert until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load up to 250 sheets of plain paper.
  4. Connect power cord to rear of unit and plug into AC outlet.
  5. Connect USB cable to computer or Ethernet cable to network router (if using network).
  6. For fax: Connect phone line from wall jack to LINE port on rear.

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of the toner cartridge. Avoid placing in direct sunlight or humid environments.

First-Time Setup

Power on the device; follow on-screen prompts on LCD display.

  1. Initial startup: Device will perform self-test and calibrate.
  2. Set language: Use MENU button to select LANGUAGE, choose ENGLISH (default).
  3. Set date/time: Navigate to SYSTEM SETUP > DATE/TIME, enter current values.
  4. Install drivers: Insert included CD or download latest drivers from Brother website.

Scanning & Faxing

Scanning: Place document face down on glass or face up in ADF. Press SCAN button, select destination (PC, USB, Email via PC). Adjust settings via driver software.

Faxing: Dial number using keypad or speed dial, press FAX START. For receiving, set mode to FAX or TEL/FAX AUTO. Use PC-FAX to send/receive faxes directly from computer.

Fax Memory: Stores up to 512 pages if paper or toner runs out during reception.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Unplug device before cleaning. Use dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners.

  1. Exterior: Wipe with damp cloth, dry immediately.
  2. Scanner glass: Clean with glass cleaner and soft cloth; avoid scratching.
  3. Paper path: Clear dust with compressed air (do not disassemble).
  4. Toner spills: Use vacuum with HEPA filter; avoid inhaling toner.
  5. Replace toner: When low toner message appears or print quality fades.
  6. Replace drum unit: When prompted or after approximately 12,000 pages.
