Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface.

  1. Remove all packaging materials and tapes from inside and outside the machine.
  2. Install the toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove cartridge from packaging, shake gently, insert until it clicks.
  3. Load paper: Pull out paper tray, adjust guides, load paper (face up), push tray back in.
  4. Connect power cord to machine and wall outlet.
  5. Connect telephone line to LINE port for fax functionality.

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of the toner cartridge. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

First-Time Setup

Power on the machine; follow prompts on LCD display.

  1. Set date and time: Use Menu button to access INITIAL SETUP.
  2. Install print driver: Insert CD or download from Brother website, follow on-screen instructions.
  3. Configure fax settings: Set station name, fax number, and ring delay if needed.
  4. Test print: Print a configuration report by holding Menu and pressing 1.

CAUTION! Ensure proper ventilation; keep at least 4 inches clearance on all sides.

Connecting Devices

Computer: USB cable to PC. Telephone line: Connect to LINE port. External telephone: Connect to EXT port.

  1. Turn off machine and computer before connecting USB cable.
  2. Connect telephone line cord from wall jack to LINE port on back of machine.
  3. For answering machine, connect between LINE port and answering machine.
  4. Select interface in menu if using parallel connection.

Tip: Use a surge protector for telephone line to protect against electrical surges.

Printing and Copying

Supports standard paper, envelopes, labels, transparencies.

  1. Printing: Send print job from computer, ensure Ready light is on.
  2. Copying: Place document face up in ADF or face down on glass, press COPY, adjust settings, press START.
  3. Multiple copies: Use numeric keypad to enter number (1-99).
  4. Enlarge/Reduce: Use +/- buttons or percentage settings.
  5. Toner Save: Press Toner Save button on control panel.
  6. ID Copy: Places front and back of ID card on single page.
  7. Paper selection: Use paper type lever for different media.

WARNING! Do not use damaged or curled paper. Avoid touching the scanner glass.

Scanning and Faxing

Scanning: Place document, press SCAN, select destination (PC, memory, email). Faxing: Dial number manually or use speed dial, press START.

  1. Memory transmission: Stores documents if line is busy, sends automatically when clear.
  2. PC-FAX: Send/receive faxes directly from computer without printing.
  3. Delayed transmission: Set time for automatic sending.
  4. Polling: Receive documents from another fax machine automatically.
  5. Error Correction Mode (ECM): Reduces transmission errors.

Note: For scanning to PC, ensure Brother software is installed and PC is on.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Unplug before cleaning. Use dry, lint-free cloth; clean exterior only.

  1. Clean scanner glass and ADF rollers with soft cloth dampened with water.
  2. Clean corona wire inside toner cartridge area if print quality issues occur.
  3. Replace toner cartridge when print becomes faint or Toner light flashes.
  4. Clean paper feed rollers with approved cleaning sheet if paper jams occur frequently.

CAUTION! Do not use alcohol, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. Never touch transfer roller.
