Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet.

1. Remove all packaging materials and tapes from inside and outside the printer.
2. Install toner cartridges: Open front cover, remove protective tapes from cartridges, insert Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black cartridges into their respective slots.
3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in input tray, load up to 250 sheets of plain paper.
4. Connect power cord to printer and plug into AC outlet.

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of toner cartridges. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or high humidity.

First-Time Setup

Power on printer; follow on-screen prompts on LCD.

1. Initial startup: Printer will run self-test and calibrate color alignment.
2. Install driver software: Insert included CD or download latest driver from Brother website, follow installation wizard.
3. Connect to computer: Use USB cable for direct connection or connect Ethernet cable for network setup.
4. Configure network settings (if applicable): Use control panel or BRAdmin software to set IP address.
5. Print test page: From driver properties or control panel, print configuration page to verify installation.

Controls and Settings

Connecting to Computer/Network

1. Turn off printer and computer before connecting cables.
2. USB: Connect USB cable to printer and computer port.
3. Ethernet: Connect Ethernet cable from router/switch to printer.
4. Power on devices; install driver software with appropriate connection type selected.
5. For network, assign IP address automatically via DHCP or manually via control panel.

Tip: Use shielded USB cable no longer than 3 meters. For stable network connection, use Cat5e or higher Ethernet cable.

Printing Documents

Supports printing from various applications via driver.

1. Ensure printer is powered on and online (Go light steady).
2. From application, select File > Print, choose Brother HL-3040CN as printer.
3. Adjust print settings: Color/Monochrome, Paper Size, Orientation, Duplex, Quality, Toner Save.
4. Click Print; job will be processed and printed.
5. For special media: Adjust paper guides, select media type in driver to prevent jams.
6. Cancel job: Press Cancel button on control panel during processing.
7. Print reports: Press Report button on control panel or select from driver utility.

WARNING! Do not open covers during printing. Allow printer to cool before performing maintenance.

Maintenance & Consumables

Toner Replacement: Replace when LCD indicates low toner or print quality fades.

1. Open front cover.
2. Remove old cartridge, gently rock new cartridge 5-6 times to distribute toner.
3. Insert new cartridge until it clicks into place.
4. Close front cover; printer will calibrate.

Drum Unit: Replace approximately every 25,000 pages (indicator on drum unit). Cleaning: Use dry, lint-free cloth to wipe exterior. Clean interior with approved vacuum if dust accumulates.

CAUTION! Use only genuine Brother TN-321 cartridges (C, M, Y, K) and DR-321 drum unit. Do not refill cartridges.
