Initial Setup & Installation

Unpack the printer and remove all packaging materials. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet and network connection.

  1. Install consumables: Open front cover, install toner cartridges (Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow), install imaging unit.
  2. Load paper: Pull out paper trays, adjust guides, load paper (letter or A4 recommended).
  3. Connect power: Plug power cord into printer and wall outlet.
  4. Power on: Press the power switch. The printer will initialize.
  5. Install driver: Use the installation CD or download from Brother website. Follow on-screen instructions for USB or network connection.

WARNING! Toner cartridges are sensitive to light. Install quickly after removing from packaging. Avoid touching the green drum surface.

Network Configuration

Configure the printer for your office network to enable shared access.

  1. Wired (Ethernet): Connect an Ethernet cable from the printer to your network router/switch.
  2. Wireless: Use the control panel: Menu > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard to select your SSID and enter password.
  3. Obtain IP Address: By default, DHCP is enabled. To set a static IP, go to Menu > Network > TCP/IP > Static.
  4. Verify Connection: Print a Network Configuration Report from Menu > Report > Config Report.
  5. Install Network Driver: During software installation, select "Network Connection" and follow prompts to detect the printer.

Tip: The Brother Web BRAdmin tool allows remote management via a web browser. Enter the printer's IP address into your browser's address bar.

Control Panel & Menu Navigation

The control panel includes an LCD screen, navigation keys, and function buttons.

Leverage the full capabilities of the printer driver and control panel.

  1. Driver Settings: Access from any application's Print dialog. Key tabs include:
    • Basic: Paper size, orientation, copies, 2-sided.
    • Advanced: Color adjustment, watermark, overlay, booklet printing.
    • Quality: Resolution, toner save mode, image smoothing.
  2. Secure Print: Store print jobs on the printer with a PIN. Release at the control panel.
  3. Poster Printing: Print a single page across multiple sheets.
  4. N-up Printing: Print multiple pages on one sheet.
  5. Advanced Copying: Use the control panel for ID Copy (scan both sides of an ID onto one page), booklet copying, and zoom reduction/enlargement.

Note: For best color results, calibrate the printer via the control panel: Menu > Printer Setup > Quality Adjustment > Calibration.

Scanning & Fax Functions

Scanning:
1. Scan to Network Folder: Configure an SMB or FTP destination in the Web BRAdmin or control panel. Place document, press Scan button, select destination.
2. Scan to Email: Set up SMTP server details. Scan and send directly.
3. Scan to USB: Insert USB flash drive into front port. Select Scan to USB from menu.
4. Scan Profiles: Save frequently used scan settings (format: PDF, JPEG; resolution; color mode) for quick access.

Fax (if model includes):
Configure fax settings (station ID, ring delay). Use the ADF or flatbed to send. Program speed dial numbers. Receive modes: Fax only, Fax/Tel auto switch.

Security & Administration

Protect your device and manage access.

  1. Access Control: Set an administrator password via Menu > Settings > Admin. Management > Access Control.
  2. Network Security: Enable SSL/TLS for Web BRAdmin, IPsec for network data, 802.1X authentication.
