Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, level surface near power outlet and network connection.

  1. Remove all packaging materials and tapes from inside and outside the machine.
  2. Install toner cartridges: Open front cover, insert cartridges in correct color slots (C, M, Y, K).
  3. Load paper: Pull out paper tray, adjust guides, load paper (letter or A4).
  4. Connect power cord and network cable (if using Ethernet).
  5. Turn on the power switch.

WARNING! Do not touch the green underside of the toner cartridges. Keep machine away from humidity and direct sunlight.

First-Time Setup

Power on the machine; follow on-screen prompts on the LCD.

  1. Initial setup: Select language, date, and time using the control panel.
  2. Install print driver: Insert the supplied CD or download from Brother website, follow installation wizard.
  3. Network configuration: Use control panel menu to set IP address (DHCP or manual).
  4. Test print: Print a configuration report to verify installation.

CAUTION! Ensure proper ventilation; do not block vents on the sides and rear.

Access menus via control panel buttons and LCD. Front Panel: Power, Stop/Exit, Navigation arrows, OK, Copy, Scan, Fax, Menu, # (interrupt).

Print Settings: Quality (Draft, Normal, Fine), Paper Type, Duplex, Toner Save Mode. Copy Settings: Copies, Darkness, Reduce/Enlarge (25%-400%), N-up (2/4/8 pages per sheet). Scan Settings: Resolution, File Format (PDF, JPEG), Destination. Fax Settings: Dial mode (Tone/Pulse), ECM, Fax Header.

Connecting to Network

Ethernet: Use RJ-45 cable to connect to router/switch. USB: Direct connection to computer.

  1. Connect Ethernet cable to machine and network router.
  2. On control panel, press Menu > Network > TCP/IP > DHCP to obtain IP automatically.
  3. Print Network Configuration Report to verify IP address.
  4. Install network printer driver on computers using the obtained IP address.

Tip: For wireless, optional Brother wireless print server can be installed.

Printing and Copying

Supports various paper types and sizes.

  1. Printing: Send print job from computer; ensure correct printer is selected.
  2. Copying: Place original on scanner glass or in ADF, press Copy, set number of copies and settings, press Start.
  3. Duplex: Enable in print driver settings or copy menu for automatic two-sided copies.
  4. Multiple pages per sheet: Select N-up in copy or print settings.
  5. ID Copy: Use to copy both sides of an ID card onto one page.

WARNING! Do not use damaged, curled, or wet paper to avoid jams.

Scanning and Faxing

Scan to email, network folder, or USB drive. Fax with memory backup.

  1. Scanning: Place document, press Scan, choose destination (Email, Network, USB), press Start.
  2. Faxing: Load document, dial number using keypad, press Start. Use speed dial for frequent numbers.
  3. Receive Fax: Set to Auto mode for automatic reception, or Manual for answering calls.
  4. Fax Forward: Forward received faxes to another fax number or email.

Maintenance & Supplies

Replace toner cartridges when low. Clean exterior with dry cloth; clean scanner glass with soft, lint-free cloth.

Toner Replacement: Open front cover, remove old cartridge, unpack new one, shake gently, insert until click.

Drum Unit Life: Approx. 25,000 pages. Replace when message appears.

CAUTION! Use only Brother Genuine toner and supplies. Do not refill cartridges.
