Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet.

  1. Remove all packaging tape and protective materials from inside and outside the printer.
  2. Install the toner cartridge: Open front cover, remove cartridge from packaging, shake gently, insert until it clicks, close cover.
  3. Load paper: Adjust paper guides in tray, load up to 250 sheets of plain paper (avoid overfilling).
  4. Connect power: Plug power cord into printer and wall outlet.
  5. Turn on printer using power switch on rear or side.
  6. Install drivers: Use included CD or download latest from Brother website. Follow on-screen instructions for USB or network connection.

WARNING! Do not touch the green drum surface of the toner cartridge. Keep printer away from heat sources and humidity.

Controls and Indicators

Control Panel includes LCD screen, navigation arrows, OK, Back, Stop/Exit, Start (Black), Start (Color for copy), Wi-Fi button.

Indicator Lights: Power (green), Error (red/orange), Toner (orange), Paper (orange), Wi-Fi (blue).

LCD Messages: Displays status, menu options, error codes, and network information.

Menu Navigation: Use arrows to access settings for Copy, Scan, Network, Reports, Maintenance, and Device Settings.

Loading Paper & Toner

Paper Loading:

  1. Pull out paper tray fully.
  2. Adjust side guides to match paper size.
  3. Fan paper stack, load print-side down, do not exceed max fill line.
  4. Gently push tray back in.
  5. For envelopes or thick paper, use manual feed slot.

Toner Replacement:

  1. Open front cover when printer is on.
  2. Remove old cartridge by pulling straight out.
  3. Unpack new cartridge, shake 5-6 times side-to-side.
  4. Insert new cartridge firmly until it clicks.
  5. Close front cover. Printer will calibrate automatically.

Tip: Use only genuine Brother TN-660 (standard) or TN-660H (high-yield) toner cartridges.

Printing Documents

From your computer or mobile device:

  1. Ensure printer is on and connected (USB/network).
  2. Open document, select File > Print.
  3. Choose "Brother DCP-1600E" as printer.
  4. Set preferences: Duplex, paper size, quality, number of copies.
  5. Click Print. Job will appear in output tray.

Mobile Printing: Install Brother iPrint&Scan app. Connect to same Wi-Fi as printer. Select photo or document to print.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing.

Copying Documents

Using the flatbed or ADF (if equipped):

  1. Place original face down on scanner glass or face up in ADF.
  2. Use Control Panel: Press Copy.
  3. Adjust settings using arrows: Number of copies (1-99), darkness, reduce/enlarge, 2-sided copy.
  4. Press Start (Black) or Start (Color) to begin copying.

Quick Copy: Press Start immediately after placing original for default settings (1 copy, 100% size).

Scanning Documents

To computer or network folder:

  1. Install Brother software (ControlCenter) or use Windows/macOS built-in scanning.
  2. Place document on scanner glass.
  3. On computer, open scanning software, select scanner, set format (PDF, JPEG), resolution, destination.
  4. Click Scan. Or press Scan button on printer to scan to default profile.

Network Scan: Configure scan-to-email or scan-to-folder via Web Based Management (access printer IP in browser).

Network Setup

Wi-Fi Setup:

  1. Press and hold Wi-Fi button on control panel until light flashes.
  2. On computer/phone, connect to Brother network SSID (temporary).
  3. Open browser, enter "http://192.168.1.1" to run setup wizard.
  4. Select your home/office Wi-Fi network, enter password.
  5. Printer will connect. Wi-Fi light stays solid when connected.

Ethernet: Connect LAN cable to printer and router. IP address will be assigned automatically (DHCP).

Tip: Print Network Configuration Report from menu to verify IP address and settings.

Maintenance & Care

Unplug printer before cleaning exterior. Use soft, dry cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents.

Cleaning Inside: Open front cover, gently wipe paper path with lint-free cloth if dust accumulates.

Cleaning Scanner Glass: Use glass cleaner and soft cloth. Spray onto cloth, not directly on glass.

Replacing Drum Unit: (If separate from toner) Approximately every 12,000 pages. Follow instructions in maintenance manual.

CAUTION! Never touch the transfer roller or imaging drum. Keep toner cartridges in sealed bag until use.

Troubleshooting
